If the global economy could be summarized in a single word, perhaps it would be unsteady.
According to the International Monetary Fund, the global economy is expected to grow by less than 3 percent in 2024—well below the historical average. While headline inflation is coming down, core inflation remains stubbornly elevated. Borrowing costs are high, and war across the world continues to create significant global instability.
At Economic Outlook Chicago 2024, Booth experts Randall S. Kroszner, Yueran Ma, and Raghuram Rajan came together to discuss current economic and political complications, as well as how those complications could potentially impact on the United States and broader global economy in the year ahead.

The Norman R. Bobins Professor of Economics served as a governor of the Federal Reserve System from 2006 to 2009, and was previously deputy dean for executive programs at Booth. He serves as the chair of the financial research advisory committee for the US Treasury’s Office of Financial Research and as a member of the Bank of England’s Financial Policy Committee.

Yueran Ma
Ma is a professor of finance and a Fama Faculty Fellow. She is also a recipient of the Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship, the AQR Institute Young Researcher Award, and the NSF CAREER Award. Her work primarily focuses on empirical studies at the intersection of finance and macroeconomics.

Now Katherine Dusak Miller Distinguished Service Professor of Finance at Chicago Booth, Rajan was the 23rd governor of the Reserve Bank of India from 2013 to 2016. He was also the chief economist and director of research at the International Monetary Fund from 2003 to 2006.
