BACKGROUND

Kyle LaFollette is a Principal Researcher and Statistical Consultant at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Kyle received his PhD in Psychology from Case Western Reserve University, where he worked with Heath Demaree (Case Western Reserve University), Brooke Macnamara (Purdue University), and Amit Goldenberg (Harvard Business School).

Research Interests

Kyle is interested in how people make decisions with respect to their emotions and implicit preferences. His research combines reinforcement learning frameworks, dynamical systems approaches, and equation discovery methods to characterize how affective and cognitive processes unfold continuously rather than in static snapshots. He is especially interested in how these dynamic patterns of emotion and belief updating give rise to outcomes relevant to organizations and society, including bias, risk-taking, and adaptability.

Some questions he's currently exploring include:

  • How do people integrate emotional feedback with reinforcement signals when updating beliefs about themselves and others?
  • What makes some individuals more resilient to stress-induced disruptions in decision-making?
  • How do background experiences and momentary fluctuations in cognitive control combine to shape implicit attitudes and the willingness to revise them over time?
  • How do stereotypes and expectations interact with emotion perception and expression to influence inferences about others’ internal states?
